French ministry pays a learning visit

An official from the French ministry of youth and sports is visiting the UK this week to learn from UK charities about how to engage disaffected young people through volunteering.

Frederic Lefret, councillor for associative life at the French ministry, will attend a two-day conference hosted by CSV in the wake of the riots across France. It is estimated that half of those arrested were aged under 18.

"The recent terrible events in France show that our country urgently needs both to find a way to foster the sense of responsibility and citizenship among its youth and to fight against the social and economic relegation of our disadvantaged suburbs," said Marie-Tellu Kane, from the French volunteering charity Unis-Cite.
