VSO sends volunteers to its projects across the world, funded by a range of activities including a direct marketing drive targeting more than 40,000 donors a year.

A total of 230,000 individuals, drawn from selected lifestyle, consumer and reciprocal lists, will receive its latest pack, which is based around the CV of volunteer midwife Francesca Harris who is scheduled to leave for Kampot in Cambodia in August.

"We first tested the CV recruitment pack, based around the details of a real volunteer just about to go overseas, back in March 2000,

said Bryan Miller, Whitewater's director of client services. "Since then, every four or so months we've updated the pack with the details of a new volunteer just about to leave and it has performed excellently."

The pack asks for a cash gift of £15, £20 or £100, with the level varying depending on the target audience, to help meet the cost of Francesca and other volunteers leaving on assignment this summer.

The pack is purposely very simple, comprising the volunteer's CV, a letter from the VSO fundraising team, a personalised reply coupon and a reply envelope. The carrier envelope carries a stamp explaining that the appeal must close by 30 August.
