A poor indigenous community in Guatemala is to receive the proceeds from a two-day event celebrating Latin American culture in London.
The Legacies of Latin America event, run by the Discovering Latin- America organisation, hopes to raise thousands of pounds to support ActionAid's work with the Xinka and Pipil communities.
It also hopes to capitalise on the public's interest in Latin American culture and history to heighten awareness of some of the problems encountered by small tribal groups in poor South American countries.
"Legacies of Latin America aims to do more than just raise money from ticket sales," said Carolina Swartz, communications officer at Discovering LatinAmerica. "We hope that by attending the event, people will be inspired to start regularly supporting charities such as ActionAid."
The event will take place at the Instituto Cervantes in London on 27-28 September.
