FUNDRAISING NEWS: Macmillan stocking event beats record

Macmillan Cancer Relief raised a record £86,500 from its seventh annual celebrity Christmas stocking auction at Christie's in London last week.

The charity asked 25 celebrities to write wish-lists of 20 items, and then solicit them from companies. The celebrities also donated one personal gift to entice bidders.

At £7,000, the highest selling stocking came from Countess Alexandra Tolstoy, whose list included riding lessons and two nights in London's Pelham Hotel.

Stylist Trinny Woodall attended to drive up the price of her lot, which included a shopping morning with her and her store cards.
