FUNDRAISING NEWS: Marine group uses water sports to get funds for dolphins

The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society is asking its supporters to host water-based fundraising events to raise money for its Active Seas campaign.

The programme is designed to raise funds to help conserve the different species of Whales and Dolphins found in UK waters. The society is encouraging people to organise fundraising and awareness events, and is promoting the campaign through water sports bodies such as the Royal Yachting Association.

"We decided against organising a national event because we thought that the whole ethos behind the campaign was geared towards asking the public to take an active approach towards conserving our endangered marine life,

said Victoria Reinthal, communications officer at the society.

"We're asking people to get together and organise sponsored activities such as sailing or diving to support our campaign."

It's the first year that the charity has run the Active Seas campaign.

In previous years, it has run a similar campaign specifically targeting sailors, but the campaign has been widened out to try and engage anyone interested in water sports.
