FUNDRAISING NEWS: Weight loss taunt leads Bhs to raise funds for diabetes

A chance remark by Phillip Green, director of the high-street store Bhs, has resulted in a company-wide fundraising drive that has raised £73,000 for Diabetes UK.

During a meeting last year, Green challenged regional development director Keith Smalls to shape up and lose a few pounds. Smalls, who has diabetes, responded by taking part in the Great North Run and Bhs decided to support Diabetes UK.

News of the challenge spread and staff at the company's 162 stores took the fundraising a step further. Collecting tins were installed in all stores, staff sold badges at their check-outs and a sale of sample clothing was arranged at the company's London head office.

"This is a unique way for an organisation to get involved and we are delighted that Bhs took such an initiative," said Sir Michael Hirst, chair of Diabetes UK.
