FUNDRAISING NEWS: Why I Give

Alan Hinkes is the UK's most successful extreme high -altitude mountaineer. He has climbed 12 of the world's 14 highest peaks over the past 12 years and plans to become the first person in the UK to climb every mountain with an altitude greater than 8,000 ft.

Which charities do you give your time to and why? WaterAid because I have witnessed the benefits of clean water in small villages in Nepal.

I am president of the north east association of the Outward Bound Trust, for which I raise money so that young people can go on their life-changing courses.

Approximately how much time or money do you give to charity? The time I have given to WaterAid through charity exhibition shows, talks and presentations is worth around £20,000.

I recently gave my services for free to make a film of a climb to Kilimanjaro, in which I guided the sponsored climbers. It was shown on Tyne Tees TV and the sponsorship money was split between WaterAid in Tanzania and the Children's Hospice.

What do you feel you bring to the charities you help? My name raises awareness for them.

I often take WaterAid's flags to the top of the mountains I climb. Last week, I climbed walls across England to attract attention to WaterAid's Challenge 8,000 fundraising event. People were sponsored to climb walls all over the country to the combined height of Everest.

Do you consider new approaches from charities asking you to fundraise for them?

If a company wants to sponsor me to climb my last two mountains for charity, I'll happily take them up. Once I've completed all 14 mountains, I might climb Everest again for WaterAid.
