GLL wins contract for the Aquatics Centre and the Multi-Use Arena

The leisure trust GLL, a social enterprise, has won the contract to run two Olympic venues, including the Aquatics Centre, after the games have finished, it was announced yesterday.

GLL, which already runs more than 100 leisure centres, mostly in London, beat the private providers Serco and Parkwood Leisure to the contract to run the Aquatics Centre and the Multi-Use Arena, which will host handball during the games, for 10 years from the start of 2013.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.

Mark Sesnan, managing director of GLL, said: "Our charitable social enterprise status, community values and successful track record demonstrate that GLL is committed to opportunity for all, ensuring the games offer a long-lasting sporting legacy all Londoners can enjoy."

Peter Holbrook, chief executive of the umbrella body Social Enterprise UK, said social enterprises had more to offer London than private companies.

"Rather than private companies making profits and giving them to their shareholders, which means the money invested in poorer communities ends up elsewhere, GLL will reinvest the profits to provide training, jobs and top quality leisure facilities at affordable prices," he said. "This is what good business looks like."
