A government fund to support new ways of increasing voluntary giving and volunteering has made £1.38m of awards to 15 organisations.

The £10m Innovation in Giving Fund, administered by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts on behalf of the Cabinet Office, has made grants worth between £47,000 and £150,000 to 15 organisations, including charities, social enterprises and for-profit businesses with a social mission.

Examples include Blue Dot, which allows people to claim rewards in exchange for supporting charities, Buzzbnk, an online crowd-funding platform that allows many people to provide small donations to fund projects, and the Good Gym, which connects people who want to get fit with physical tasks that need to be done.

The Innovation in Giving Fund was launched in September last year, together with the Social Action Fund, as part of a £34m package to increase volunteering and giving.

The giving fund received more than 400 applications for funding, of which 62 were shortlisted to pitch their ideas to a selection panel.

"Further investment announcements are expected to be made over the next few weeks as the pitching process continues," said a Nesta spokesman. "It is expected that a second funding round will be made in the spring."
