Co-operative raised £7m

The retailer's partnership in 2011 with Mencap and its sister charity Enable Scotland broke its fundraising record

The mutual retailer the Co-operative Group raised a record-breaking £7m for Mencap and its sister charity Enable Scotland as part of its charity of the year partnership in 2011.

A spokeswoman for the group said it was the most it had ever raised for a charity of the year. She said the company, which operates a partnership only every other year, raised £3.8m for the RNID in its partnership in 2009. RNID has since changed its name to Action on Hearing Loss.

"We will have another charity of the year in 2013, but we don’t have a chosen charity yet," the Co-operative spokeswoman said. "The process of choosing one will start later this year. No further details are available at the moment."

A spokeswoman for Mencap said it was the most that a charity of the year partnership had raised for the charity. The money will be used to launch a new project called Inspire Me, which will provide activities and training that will give thousands of young people with learning disabilities the chance to learn new skills.

A statement by Mencap about the partnership said it fundraising activities included a Santa dash, cycle rides, marathons and a charity single.
