Goldring, who has been chief executive of the international development charity for nine years, will replace Jo Williams, who announced her retirement earlier this year (Third Sector Online, 21 February).

Goldring previously worked at Oxfam, the Department for International Development and the United Nations Development Programme. He will begin his new role at the learning disability charity in November.

"I will not be making any drastic changes to Mencap's structure, because they already have strong foundations," he said. "But in order to drive it forward I will be listening to its needs and evaluating any small changes that can be made."

Goldring said his new position would be very different from his current role. "There will be a lot of adjustment and learning on my behalf," he said. "I'm leaving behind a company that I have become so familiar with - and even though the element of social inclusion will still be apparent in my new role, the context will be very different."

The position of chief executive at VSO will be advertised as from next Monday.
