GuideStar launches campaigns section

Charity information website GuideStar has launched a new section in which charities can publicise their campaigns and advocacy activities.

Campaigning has been much in the news recently, with the Government hinting that the rules requiring campaigning to be an "ancillary" part of charities' activities may be relaxed. The Governance of Britain green paper, presented to Parliament by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, signalled the Government's intention to help third sector organisations "better campaign on issues that are likely to advance the purposes for which they have been established".

However, a spokesperson for GuideStar said the new section had been launched primarily for aesthetic reasons.

She said: "We already had a section called ‘how to help this charity', where charities could say they were looking for volunteers or supporters for campaigns. Some of those entries were getting very full so we wanted to give charities a bit more space."

The new section can be populated via the 'update my charity' facility, which also contains a link to the latest Charity Commission guidance on campaigning activity.
