He currently weighs 46kg, which according to the charity makes him 53 per cent overweight.

The seven dogs and one cat will attempt to lose their excess weight, while supporters can follow their progress on the charity's website. The pet with the biggest percentage weight loss at the end of the competition will be crowned PDSA Pet Fit Club Champ.

The charity's vets and nurses have created a specially tailored 100-day diet and fitness programme for each of the finalists to follow to help them shift their excess bulk. Their owners will be encouraged to overhaul their pets' diet and exercise routines. Keano's programme includes daily walks and a swim where possible.

PDSA statistics show that about 30 per cent - or nearly 2 million - of dogs are overweight or obese.
