Inmates 'should get to volunteer'

Graham Willgoss

CSV is calling on prison chiefs to give inmates more opportunities to volunteer.

A former prisoner described the success of CSV's pre-release scheme and pilot day release scheme to senior HM Prison Service staff at an event held by the charity at Askham Grange prison, near York, yesterday.

Bob Davies, head of offender management at Askham Grange, said: "By volunteering, prisoners develop key skills they will need when they eventually look for work. It acts both as a first step back into the community and as a major step in their rehabilitation."

A spokesman for CSV said 98 per cent of young offenders who volunteer while on temporary release from prison complete their tasks successfully and secure references and contacts.
