Justin Davis Smith, chief executive of Volunteering England, will become executive director for volunteering at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations when the two organisations merge next year.
The umbrella body and the volunteering charity announced in September that a new volunteering directorate would be created within the merged organisation, which will keep the NCVO’s name.
The merger is expected to be happen in early 2013, subject to due diligence.
Davis Smith said: "With my colleagues, I will continue to advocate strengthening the contribution volunteers already make in voluntary, public and private sector organisations, and ensure that the crucial role volunteers play in our communities is recognised and supported."
Sir Stuart Etherington, chief executive of the NCVO, said Davis Smith’s expertise "would be invaluable as we look to put volunteering at the heart of all our work". He said: "This merger will also create many opportunities to strengthen our work on behalf of the sector. Justin is an outstanding champion for volunteering and will help us make the most of these opportunities."
The organisations announced earlier this month that two Volunteering England trustees would join the NCVO's board, increasing its size to 14, once the merger takes place.
