Medium and message: Kids Company

Children's charity Kids Company hopes to replicate the success of an exhibition it mounted at Tate Modern.

Kids Company's shocking Shrinking Childhoods exhibition at Tate Modern in London two years ago was a big success. Now the support charity for children and vulnerable young people hopes to create another stir with its new exhibition, Angels and Demons.

"The point of the new exhibition is to get a debate going about the way children are portrayed in the media," says Elizabeth Rodgers, spokeswoman for Kids Company. "The children we deal with are vulnerable, but they are not seen as victims; they are described as 'feral' or 'hoodies'."

The exhibition will consist of work by children who attend Kids Company projects and will be on display at Shoreditch Town Hall in east London from June to September. It will also tackle children's own preconceptions about the older generation.

"Children have their own notions about the corporate world and think that adults don't know what they are going through," says Rodgers. "We hope the exhibition will provoke a debate about these issues, and we are holding a conference to which we will invite policy makers, child-care experts and others."

Shrinking Childhoods aimed to show the public what childhood meant to Kids Company's services users. It featured a reconstructed crack den and generated lots of media coverage.

"We got a huge response to the exhibition and hope that Angels and Demons will have a similar impact," says Rodgers. "Shrinking Childhoods was extremely powerful."
