Money box for Mencap

This image of the ubiquitous red postbox is one of the winning entries in a competition held by Mencap to create a calendar depicting iconic English objects.

More than 1,500 children with learning disabilities entered the competition to find 13 pictures: one for each month and one for the front cover. Other winning entries included fish and chips, a phone box and the London Eye. Each image is accompanied by a quote from the artist explaining his or her choice. Kirsty Hopper, who selected the postbox, said: "They are everywhere, in every town and village in the country." The calendar costs £4.99 and will be sold to raise money for Mencap. The actress Dame Judi Dench is supporting the project. She said: "A calendar of art by children with learning disabilities is a wonderful way to include the people that Mencap works so hard to help."
