Clements, who currently runs environmental advice organisation Ferrypath Consulting, will take up his new role in September when current director Professor Jeremy Greenwood retires after 19 years in the post.

Clements was previously director of protected areas for English Nature. He was seconded to Natural England as director of science evidence and policy in 2006.

He said: "The partnership of birdwatchers and scientists at the trust is a powerful alliance, delivering knowledge of our birds and their habitats into the heart of decision-making about the environment."
