Wootton joins Dignity in Dying, the charity that favours assisted death, from her role as head of communications at the Equal Opportunities Commission. She succeeds Deborah Annetts, who has recently been appointed chief executive of YWCA England and Wales.

Wootton said she wanted to take the charity's assisted death campaign to politicians in a "new and challenging way".

She said: "Politically, this is an exciting time, with a new Brown government and an opposition that is more engaged than any before with the need to appeal to the electorate on social issues."
