Nacro names jail governor as chief

Paul McDowell will take up the post in October

Crime reduction charity Nacro has appointed the governor of Brixton prison as its new chief executive.

Paul McDowell has been governor of HMP Brixton since 2006. During his time in the role he has overseen the launch of Electric Radio, a radio station run by prisoners.

McDowell will join the charity in October and work alongside current chief executive Paul Cavadino until he leaves in December. The handover date has yet to be confirmed.

McDowell said: "Prison governors are very aware of what Nacro does and, if they know what they're doing, they'll work alongside it.

"Nacro is working in a competitive environment in terms of contracted work, so I want to make sure it retains its high status."
