The NCVO is to appoint a director of enterprise to seek new sources of income.
The £70,000-a-year head of department position will be filled in the late summer.
The new director will lead plans for an "organisational presence outside London".
Campbell Robb, director of public policy at the NVCO, said the role would help to ensure the umbrella body was not too dependent on any one source of funds.
"We always want to ensure that, although we get money from government through strategy grants or contracts, we have a balanced income stream," he said.
According to NCVO's accounts, 12 per cent of its income is a strategic Home Office grant, 34 per cent comes from project grants, 23 per cent from earned income and 11 per cent from membership subscriptions.
The new director is charged with expanding "income sources and exploiting new opportunities".
Robb said new income-generating plans would provide new services for members.
