Costello joins the charity from her previous position as director of the Medieval Trust, a charitable exhibition centre in Ireland.

Samaritans has 21 branches across Ireland, which were contacted by almost 300,000 people in 2005.The charity says an average of 15 per cent of calls came from people who said they were contemplating suicide.

"By providing an outlet for anyone suffering any degree of emotional distress to share those feelings in confidence, Samaritans is a simple but vital service in a complex and confusing world," said Costello said.
