New London Marathon sponsor announces charity partner

Virgin Money will replace Flora as the London Marathon's lead sponsor from 2010 in a five-year deal worth £17m. The company, which is the financial services division of Richard Branson's Virgin Group, has selected Clic Sargent as its charity partner for 2010.

Clic Sargent, which had 300 runners in the 2008 race and raised £600,000, aims to triple the number of runners taking part and raise £1.5m from the 2010 tie-up.

Dr Carole Easton, chief executive of Clic Sargent, said: “Being selected represents an unprecedented opportunity to massively increase our profile and fundraising income from this event.”

Virgin Money chose Clic Sargent after talks with Virgin Unite1, the company’s not-for-profit foundation, which already works with the charity. The company said it would work with Virgin Unite1 and use its own infrastructure, online capability and expertise to help boost marathon fundraising.

Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin, said: “It’s the single biggest fundraising day on the planet and we want to make it even bigger – our aim is to help runners smash the quarter of a billion pound mark in five years. The Virgin Money team have got some great ideas to raise more money and together we’re looking forward to putting on a great show for London.”
