New member for Third Sector Advisory Body

The Office of the Third Sector has made an additional appointment to the body that advises ministers on issues affecting voluntary sector organisations.

Helen Paterson, director of children's services at Sunderland City Council, has been appointed as the 14th member of the Government's Third Sector Advisory Body.

The rest of the panel was named in July, but an OTS spokesman said Paterson was brought in to add extra experience to the panel.

"It's important that the body has a wide range of experience from within the sector and from outside," he said. "This is why we identified the need for an additional member with third sector commissioning experience and acted quickly to fill this gap."

Kevin Brennan, Minister for the Third Sector, said: "Understanding and improving commissioning from the third sector is key to the success of so many projects and programmes at a local level. That is why it is important that we have advisory body members who can talk to us at a policy level about what works for the sector."

Paterson is currently a member of a wide range of ministerial, national and regional groups, including the ministerial advisory group for behaviour and attendance. She was a director of school improvement, performance and partnership at Solihull Borough Council and has been a Justice of the Peace since 1993.
