New third sector minister takes to the stage

Kevin Brennan has pledged to be a "strong champion" for the sector in his first statement since being appointed to the role.

Brennan pointed to his experience working with disability charities to highlight his credentials for the new post, to which he was appointed this week.

"In the current economic climate, it is more important than ever that the third sector has a strong champion within government," he said.

"My own work in setting up and chairing the All Party Parliamentary Group on muscular dystrophy has given me an insight into the challenges that the sector faces. I am committed to doing everything I can to drive forward the Government's programme of support for the sector."

He said charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises were highly responsive to the problems individuals faced because they were a product of communities.
