London Development Agency scheme will use volunteer centres to manage recruits
Volunteer centres in London are being lined up to recruit and manage about 8,000 volunteer tour guides for visitors to the capital during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The London Development Agency is organising a scheme called host city volunteering, in which a number of areas of London would be designated as ‘entry points' to the capital.
Volunteers in these areas would show visitors around and provide them with information about the games.
Kerry Tweed, director of Greater London Volunteering, the umbrella body for volunteer centres in the capital, said the organisation had advised the LDA on how to run the scheme.
"The LDA has shown a firm commitment to working with the existing infrastructure," she said. "It's encouraging that volunteer centres are being involved in this way."
But she said it was unclear whether volunteer centres would be given any funding to support the extra volunteers.
The LDA is expected to provide more details of the scheme in July.
