Organisation promoting transparency in sector will help charities respond to negative media coverage

The Impact Coalition, which promotes transparency among charities, has set up a media response unit to respond to negative media coverage of charities.

The organisation, which is run by chief executives body Acevo, will offer charities that are criticised in the media the option to refer journalists to its staff and members of its steering group, who will respond on the charity’s behalf.

The steering group includes representatives from the Institute of Fundraising, the Fundraising Standards Board, the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association and the Charity Finance Directors’ Group, as well as a number of charities.

Liam Cranley, head of the coalition, said:"If an organisation doesn’t have the confidence to put together its own response to questions from journalists, we will do it for them."

He said he also wanted charities to alert the coalition to negative media coverage:"In effect, we want the sector to act as our eyes and ears."

Once the coalition had built up a picture of the types of criticism the sector received from the press, he said, it would be able to respond more effectively.
