Money Matters: Credit unions, mutuals for public service delivery and the Development Trusts Association

By David Ainsworth, Third Sector, 13 July 2010

David Ainsworth's round-up of what's happening in the finance world

A Treasury minister has said that the new government is committed to helping credit unions grow and expand. Mark Hoban, financial secretary to the Treasury, told a reception organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Credit Unions that he believed strong credit unions would help British society. "It is in our interest to do whatever we can to help the credit union movement prosper," he said.

A free guide to establishing mutuals for public service delivery has been produced by TPP Law, a specialist provider of legal services to social enterprises. TPP warns that any new organisations must establish a legal model, develop a business plan and address workforce issues such as pensions. The guide can be downloaded from www.tpplaw.co.uk/.

The Development Trusts Association, the umbrella body for community organisations, will hold its annual conference in Derby on 12 to 14 September. The conference will feature visits to development projects around Derby and speeches from the heads of community development organisations around the world.
