Plans include an online system where members can record their learning during the year for free
The Institute of Fundraising is considering plans to make continuous professional development compulsory for any fundraiser who wants to be a member of the organisation.
Paul Marvell, director of learning, said that with the launch of new training and qualifications over the coming months, the institute was hoping to make professional development a mandatory element of IoF membership within the next five years.
"Fundraisers have to be prepared to keep their professional development up to date," he told Third Sector.
"You wouldn't expect people in any other profession to be handling large sums of money without having done any training or taking qualifications beforehand."
He said he was confident that in the next 10 years "we will see a massive change in the way the sector works".
Marvell said the institute was in the process of setting up an online system where members would be able to plan and record their learning during the course of the year for free.
Amanda McLean, who will join the institute as chief executive in November, has said making fundraising more professional is a top priority because it would enable people to be more effective fundraisers at a difficult time.
Alan Clayton, managing director of fundraising consultancy Clayton Burnett, said making fundraising more professional was "the single most important thing we can do".
He said the cost and practicalities of making continuous professional development a mandatory element of institute membership would have to be carefully considered because it would not be cheap for charities or the IoF to do it well. "Cheap professional development is an insult to the profession," Clayton said.
