Civil society minister says he will write to the company saying it should be 'more constructive'

Nick Hurd, the Minister for Civil Society, has pledged to write to the technology giant Apple about its refusal to allow donations to charity through iPhone apps.

Pressure has been mounting on Apple in recent months to allow donations to be made through iPhone apps, although the company has not made clear why it does not allow this.

Its guidelines say that a donation must be collected through a website or in a text message.

Hurd told Third Sector he would ask the company why it refused to allow people to donate to charity directly through apps and would encourage it to become more of a leader in mobile giving.

"I’d like to understand it from Apple’s point of view," he said. "It seems it could be a leader with this and I don’t understand why it is dragging its heels.

"I will write to Apple in the next couple of weeks to get clarity on its position and encourage the company to be more positive and constructive."

A recent online petition urging Apple to change its guidelines has attracted more than 10,000 signatures from around the world.
