Lloyds Banking Group and British Heart Foundation
When Lloyds Banking Group chose the British Heart Foundation as its charity of the year in 2008, 25 human resources employees on the bank's graduate leadership programme decided to set an example and create a dedicated fundraising team.
In the partnership, the banking group set a company-wide target of raising £2m between July 2008 and June 2010 to pay for 15 BHF specialist heart nurses across the UK. Because the partnership was so successful, it was extended until the end of 2010, with the aim of raising £3m in total, which would pay for another 12 heart healthcare professionals.
Although all the bank's employees were encouraged to get involved in the fundraising, the HR staff went a step further and created the One Heart for HR team, setting their own target of raising £55,000 to pay for one BHF specialist heart nurse to be in post for one year. The HR board also asked the team to find ways of involving colleagues in the charity fundraising partnership.
A campaign structure was developed, based on team members' strengths, and a common framework was established to align the team with the Lloyds Banking Group's values. One Heart for HR also set up a working committee of eight members to meet weekly and iron out project issues such as finance, publicity and stakeholder management.
The starting budget for the project was £5,731 but the team achieved a final cost of £3,102. The HR team alone raised a total of £84,200 for the BHF, more than 50 per cent above the target it had set itself.
Throughout the year, the team came up with fundraising events and initiatives and developed a website to promote their project, build up support and encourage local communities to develop their own fundraising initiatives, including raffles and quiz nights. They also set up an Enterprise Team Challenge to encourage colleagues to fundraise as much as possible: this generated more than £21,000 in only 24 hours.
In this, the inaugural year for this category, the judges decided that the Lloyds HR graduate team had done exceptional work, not only in their own fundraising activities, but also by setting an example of teamwork to colleagues and motivating them to raise money for the charity.

"Their ability to engage with a large and diverse workforce and encourage local teams to take ownership to raise more funds was a big factor in their success."
