Environmental regeneration charity leader tops voluntary sector names in Queen's Birthday Honours List

Tony Hawkhead, the chief executive of the environmental regeneration charity Groundwork, has been given a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Hawkhead, who received the award for his services to environmental regeneration, said the honour was for an "organisation that I have been lucky enough to be part of for the past 15 years.

"I am incredibly proud of what the staff at Groundwork have done to change places and change lives, especially in those areas that need it the most."

Other voluntary sector figures to receive awards include Justin Davis Smith, chief executive of Volunteering England, who received a CBE.

CBEs were also awarded to: John Knight, former head of external policy at Leonard Cheshire Disability; Jack Petchey, founder of the Jack Petchey Foundation, and Simon Thurley, chief executive of English Heritage.

Recipients of an OBE included: Jane Ashworth, chief executive of StreetGames; Geoff Baxter, founder, Reflex; Simon Blake, chair of Compact Voice and national director of Brook; Jane Cocking, humanitarian director, Oxfam; Pam Hibbert, assistant director policy and research unit, Barnardo’s; Paul Martin, chief executive, the Lesbian and Gay Foundation; David McKenna, chief executive, Victim Support Scotland; and Ramesh Kumari Verma, chief executive, Ekta Project.

Gill Raikes, fundraising director at the National Trust, was among many voluntary sector figures to be awarded the MBE.

- Jenny Edwards, chief executive of the homelessness charity Homeless Link, was awarded a CBE for services to disadvantaged people
