Workshop: boosts financial knowledge

Lloyds Banking Group is running free money-management skills training for the sector workers

With the cost of living rising and unemployment remaining high, the Lloyds Banking Group is providing free money-management skills training to voluntary sector workers to help them to assist beneficiaries.

As part of the Money for Life programme, staff can take part in Teach Me, an online financial knowledge course that takes about 30 hours to complete, or Teach Others, a two-day workshop that can equip them with the knowledge they need to run training sessions.

David Fagan, knowledge director at the National Skills Academy for Financial Services, which is running the Teach Others training sessions, says: "The objective is to give people the skills to run financial capability workshops with their service users. Ultimately, we want people to be able to discuss issues such as budgeting and the difference between store, debt and credit cards."

Charity workers who take part in the Teach Others programme only are required to have some degree of knowledge about financial products such as bank accounts and loans, but aren't expected to be experts. "We want them talking to their service users about using price comparison websites to get the best prices, for example. It's common sense, and it's something most people do when they're buying goods or services."
