The artist donated artworks worth £78.1m to his charitable foundation
The artist David Hockney has topped the Sunday Times 2012 Giving List having donated artworks worth £78.1m to his charitable foundation.
Hockney led the list because his donations to the David Hockney Foundation were worth more than twice his remaining wealth of £34m.
The list, which was published yesterday, said Hockney’s position at the top of the list signified a more "broadly based culture of philanthropy among the wealthiest people in the country" than had been recorded in the past because the list had previously been topped by financiers and business people.
The list is ranked according to the proportion of total wealth donated or pledged to charity in the most recent 12 months for which the foundation, trust or personal accounts are available.
Christopher Cooper-Hohn, co-founder of the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, was second in the list having donated £72.1m, while Anurag Dikshit, founder of the Kusuma Trust and who was top of the list last year, came third.
