Banking group hopes the partnership with a charity chosen by its staff will raise £750,000

The banking group Santander has opened applications for its 2013 charity of the year partner, which it hopes will net the chosen charity at least £750,000.

Applicants must be registered UK charities and have a dedicated account manager who could work with Santander to instigate fundraising campaigns for the 26,000 staff across its UK network of about 1,400 branches.

Santander said it wanted to offer its employees the opportunity to take part in a range of activities, including overseas treks, national events, physical challenges, corporate events and smaller scale fundraising such as pin badge campaigns.

The bank’s 2011 charity partner was the Alzheimer’s Society, which raised £580,000 for the charity. Its partner for 2012 is Marie Curie Cancer Care, which the banking group hopes will raise £750,000 for the charity.

Charities interested in applying to be the 2013 partner should visit www.aboutsantander.co.uk/csr/communities. The deadline for applications is 5pm on 30 June.

A shortlist of candidates will be put to Santander employees, who will vote for their preferred charity in September. The successful applicant will be announced in December.

Jonathan Elliott, senior community manager at Santander, said: "It’s essential for us that the fundraising we do can translate into tangible support for our causes. We’ve had some tremendously successful relationships over the past few years and we look forward to seeing a wide range of proposals for 2013."
