Marie Curie Cancer Care has appointed Dr Jane Collins as its next chief executive.

Collins, who has been chief executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital for the past 10 years, will take over from Thomas Hughes-Hallett in September.

John Varley, chair of Marie Curie, said Collins would bring a "deep understanding of the NHS, the commissioning landscape and the work of academic and research institutions".

"In addition, she has extensive experience of fundraising through combining her job as chief executive at Great Ormond Street Hospital with running the hospital’s charitable arm," he said.

Collins said she would be sad to leave Great Ormond Street but was ready for a new challenge.

"These are times of great change, challenge and opportunity for end-of-life care across the UK, and I am thrilled to be joining Marie Curie at such an exciting moment," she said.

Hughes-Hallett, who has been chief executive of the charity for the past 12 years, announced in February that he would retire from the role this year.
