28,650 charities on the register list arts, culture, heritage or science among their activities in documents filed with the Charity Commission
11,591 charities provide buildings, facilities and open space; 6,197 charities make grants to organisations; 4,343 act as umbrella or resource bodies; and 3,878 make grants to individuals
17,937 work with children and young people, 11,608 support older people and 8,967 work with other voluntary bodies
114 charities have incomes of more than £10m, such as the Prince's Trust and the Royal Shakespeare Company
4,423 cover England and Wales, 635 operate in England, 539 cover Wales and 1,231 operate only in London
2,280 are overdue in filing their most recent documents with the Charity Commission
