Latest accounts also show major changes in funding to different programmes

The Cabinet Office reduced its total grant funding by about £17.6m last year, according to its most recent set of accounts.

The Cabinet Office accounts, published last month, revealed that grant funding was £194.5m in the financial year 2011/12, compared with £212.1m in the previous year.

The accounts also revealed major changes in the programmes funded.

Nothing was spent on grant support for Futurebuilders and Capacitybuilders, while £36.1m and £24.8m were invested in the year before.

Only £1.25m was spent on the volunteering charity v, a heavy decrease from £42.5m previously. And only £1.7m was allocated to the Grassroots Grants programme, compared with £49.6m in the preceding year.

But £88.9m was channelled into the Transition Fund, up from £9.1m, and £20.7m was spent on the National Citizen Service, compared with the previous figure of just £2.6m.

Total spending by the Office for Civil Society was £184m, a rise from £120m.

The Cabinet Office said it had missed its target to train 800 community organisers by the end of the year, but remained on track to train 5,000 by 2015. It said that the average cost of training a senior organiser was £676, and for training a mid-level organiser the figure was £190.

The figures showed Nick Hurd, the Minister for Civil Society, received £23,697 for his ministerial work, in addition to his salary of about £65,700 as an MP. Figures show that Hurd's salary increased by around £2,800; a Cabinet Office spokesowman said this was because Hurd had only been in post for a portion of the previous year.
