Francis Maude, the Cabinet Office minister, says the members of the programme will promote the mutuals agenda and identify new projects

The Cabinet Office has appointed 15 mutuals ambassadors to support public sector workers who want to spin out their services ito become independent social enterprises, Francis Maude, the Cabinet Office minister, announced today.

The members of the Mutuals Ambassadors Programme will work free of charge to "drive forward the public service mutuals movement", a statement from the Cabinet Office said.

They include Peter Holbrook, chief executive of Social Enterprise UK, and Craig Dearden-Phillips, managing director of the consultancy Stepping Out and a Third Sector columnist.

Ambassadors will deliver advice and support to emerging and existing mutuals, including troubleshooting and sharing commercial expertise. They will also promote the mutuals agenda and identify upcoming new projects.

"These new ambassadors will play a key role in finding solutions to overcome barriers to upcoming and existing mutuals," said Maude.

"We know there are thousands of front-line staff who know how the services they deliver can be run better, and the extra support we have announced today will help them to get there."

Maude also announced the relaunch of the Mutuals Information Service, the central information website for those considering spin-outs, where commissioners can see case studies, ask questions on chat forums and read advice and guidance.
