The Labour MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central will join Gareth Thomas and Jon Trickett in a team focusing on third sector policy

The Labour Party has appointed Chi Onwurah, the MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central, as a shadow Cabinet Office minister with responsibility for social enterprise.

Onwurah will join Gareth Thomas, the MP for Harrow West and shadow minister for civil society, and Jon Trickett, the MP for Hemsworth and shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, in a team specialising in third sector policy.

Onwurah was previously part of the shadow ministerial team for business, innovation and skills.

Party leader Ed Miliband announced that Thomas would be taking up an additional role as deputy shadow minister for London, behind Sadiq Khan. A spokeswoman for Thomas said his responsibility for the third sector would not be changing.

Onwurah said in a statement that she was taking on a "wide-ranging role in the shadow Cabinet Office" that "encompasses pressing areas where this government is failing in cyber security, social entrepreneurship and open government.

She said: "It will give me the opportunity to contribute to key areas of policy development."
