The Charity Fraud Line, likely to start work next month, will retain callers' anonymity and will run all day, every day

The anti-crime charity Crimestoppers is to launch a charity fraud reporting telephone line and website for charities and their staff.

Charity Fraud Line, which is likely to be launched next month, will be an anonymous fraud reporting service, available 24 hours a day for 365 days a year. There will also be a dedicated website offering advice and an online fraud reporting function.

Crimestoppers said it had received funding for the set-up and first year running costs of the service, which will be available to all UK charities and their staff. A spokeswoman said she was unable to give any further details, including how much funding it had received and where it had come from, until after it the service was launched.

Any reports of fraud received by the service will be disseminated to a nominated point of contact within each charity that has signed up to the service, Crimestoppers said.

Earlier this year the Charity Commission said it would revise and make it easier to access its anti-fraud guidance after a review found "significant gaps" in charities’ anti-fraud procedures and controls.

Crimestoppers said it would host a presentation at its central office before the service was launched so that charities could learn more about the service.

The new service is supported by the Charity Commission and the Financial Services Authority, Crimestoppers said.
