Alice Hunt has been appointed chief executive of Join In, the government-backed charity set up to continue the legacy of volunteering begun by last year’s Olympic Games in London.

Hunt joins from the educational publishing company Pearson, where she was director of communications for international business.

Join In was set up with £2m of funding from the Cabinet Office’s Social Action Fund. It encourages people across the country to get involved at their local sports facilities and promotes volunteering in local community organisations and other institutions.

The scheme is now the official ‘home’ of the London 2012 Games Makers and is developing more volunteering opportunities, scheduled to begin later this year.

In a statement, Hunt said: "Every day volunteers are making the wheels of their communities go round more smoothly. We have a lot to learn from these people, who give so much and expect so little in return. I hope Join In will play its part in recognising these local heroes and inspiring others to join them."

Sir Charles Allen, chair of Join In, said of Hunt’s appointment: "Alice was the outstanding candidate for the role of chief executive and we look forward to her joining the team. Under her leadership we want Join In to grow and become a key part of the legacy of London 2012."
