Tories demand debate on 'underwhelming' third sector review
By Andy Ricketts, Third Sector Online, 24 July 2007
The Conservatives plan to force a parliamentary debate on the third sector review if the Government fails to schedule one for the autumn, the shadow charities minister warned today.
Greg Clark said the review, published today, lacked detail: “This is an underwhelming report that conceals more than it reveals. We need a proper debate in the House of Commons to give it the scrutiny it deserves.
“For instance, there’s no breakdown of the money promised to the voluntary sector. Much of it has been announced before, and the report fails to compare the proposed funding with funding in previous years.”
The report also failed to say why it would be more effective to channel more than £100m into volunteering project v rather than into grassroots organisations, Clark said. It also did not contain any measures to strengthen the Compact, he said.
The Tories can use one of their ‘opposition days’, when the party sets the topics for debate rather than the Government, to force parliamentary time on the review.
“I hope we don’t have to shame the minister by using opposition time to debate a Government review,” Clark added.
