Phil Hope puts on some Groundwork

Phil Hope, Minister for the Third Sector, had a knock about with Corby's Oakley Vale Estate tennis hopefuls in a recent visit to Groundwork's newest scheme in Northampton.

He made the trip to promote the Government’s support of community-based and local authority partnerships.

Groundwork, which supports communities in need, is helping local volunteers run tennis coaching programmes during school breaks, to help young people qualify as community sports leaders.

Hope said: “It is fantastic to see how Groundwork projects such as this one can benefit local communities and help rejuvenate the areas in which they live.”

The scheme involves the whole community, with adults also volunteering to help organise coaching sessions.

Tony Hawkhead, chief executive of Groundwork, believes the project gives young people a focus. “The coaching qualifications provide something positive for them to work towards, which can help challenge some of the more negative perceptions adults may hold,” he said. “It will also give them the confidence to realise that they can make a meaningful contribution to their communities.”
