Commission cracks down on late accounts

By Paul Jump, Third Sector Online, 11 March 2008

Charities that fail to prove they are still operating will be removed from the Register of Charities under new Charity Commission measures.

A commission spokeswoman said 1,200 charities on the register had not submitted an annual return or accounts for more than six years, while 9,000 charities with a previously reported income of more than £10,000 had not submitted documents for the past financial year.

Under the new arrangements, if the commission has not received the relevant documents within a year of the original deadline, the offending charity will be removed from the register. Action may also be taken to protect the charity’s assets. Charities that have not been in touch with the commission for several years may be given less than a year before they are removed.

“The public have a reasonable expectation that the Register of Charities will not have organisations on it that are no longer operating,” said Andrew Hind, chief executive of the commission. “Our new approach should ensure that such charities are promptly removed.”

Commission must be very swift to remove charities which failed to send in the annual return or not operating any longer. This is logic and very clear.
