Charities should tap into a new trend for volunteering after retirement, according to new research.
A survey of 1,000 workers aged 45 and over showed that more than one in five are considering taking up voluntary work after they retire.
Ipsos MORI, the consultancy that carried out the survey, said it shows that older people are keen to keep themselves busy after leaving formal employment.
“We encourage the charity sector to tap into the experience and skills retirees can offer them,” said Karen Wisdom, research director at Ipsos MORI.
Retired workers are increasingly keen to work in the third sector, according to Chris Ball, chief executive of the Age and Employment Network.
“Working in the voluntary sector is one of the options retired people are increasingly considering,” he said. “Skills and experience can blend with social values of organisations that people can believe in, and offer a stimulating third-age career.”
