New guidelines on volunteer management

By Rosie Walker, Third Sector Online, 29 August 2008

The UK Workforce Hub has published a new set of standards for the management of volunteers.

The UK Workorce Hub – based at umbrella body the NCVO – says the new National Occupational Standards will improve the quality of volunteer management.

The 151-page document lists things managers should do to promote volunteering, recruit and manage volunteers and manage themselves. People taking a National Vocational Qualification in volunteer management will have to show that they have met the standards.

A group of volunteers and volunteer management experts wrote the guidelines after volunteers and managers submitted their views online and at touring events.

Janet Fleming, head of the UK Workforce Hub, said volunteers and their managers would benefit enormously from the new standards.

Justin Davis Smith, chief executive of Volunteering England, said the standards would help volunteer managers develop their own skills and professionalism.
