Senior journalists to compile guide on how to pitch volunteering stories to the media

Senior editorial staff from tabloid newspapers and major broadcasting organisations have agreed to produce a set of guidelines for charities on how to sell volunteering stories to the media.

At a recent meeting hosted by the Media Trust, senior figures from The Sun, the Daily Mirror, Google, the BBC and ITV met volunteering organisations to discuss ways in which volunteering should be sold to the press.

Written advice for organisations that use volunteers and are looking for exposure will be available early in 2009.

Volunteering organisations Volunteering England, Orange Rockcorps, CSV, TimeBank UK, the Council on Social Action and the Red Foundation attended the meeting as members of the volunteering promotions group, one of six ‘action groups' charged with implementing the recommendations of the Independent Commission on the Future of Volunteering.

Justin Davis Smith, chief executive of Volunteering England, said: "The enthusiasm from such leading figures of the communications industry to promote volunteering has been amazing."
