Record fundraising total for London Marathon

By Kaye Wiggins, Third Sector Online, 27 April 2009

Justgiving's £22.4m is up 7 per cent on last year's total

This year's Flora London Marathon raised a record £22.4m for charities, according to donor website Justgiving.

A spokesman for the organisation said the figure was 7 per cent higher than the 2008 total. He said the average donation had fallen to £29.50, from £32 in 2008, but that an increase in the number of donors had compensated for this.

Almost £1.6m was donated through the site on 24 April, the highest figure the site has raised in any 24-hour period to date.

Marathon sponsorships through the site will continue for a further three months, and the final figure raised through the marathon is expected to be about £25m.

Anne-Marie Huby, managing director of Justgiving, said: "Despite the economic climate, the incredible generosity of the British public continues to amaze. Average gifts are down on last year, but many more people are giving than ever before."

Ben Brabyn, managing director of fundraising website Bmycharity, said marathon sponsorship had generated £1.4m on the site, 47 per cent higher than the 2008 figure.

More than 35,000 people completed the 26.2-mile course.
