Network of law firms plans to offer charity-branded services

By Paul Jump, Third Sector Online, 21 December 2009

Customers want to buy from household names, says the Legal Alliance

A network of independent law firms from across England and Wales is offering to provide charity-branded legal services that would donate up to 10 per cent of their fees to charity.

The Legal Alliance came up with the idea after YouGov research found that many people were unable to name a single law firm and would prefer to buy legal services from established household name organisations such as charities.

The alliance's network of local firms would provide legal services branded with charity names to its members and supporters. There would be no cost to the charities, which would receive between 5 and 10 per cent of payments for the firms' services, depending on the type of legal work involved.

Norrie Macdonald, business development director at the alliance, said charities should take a "serious look" at the fundraising opportunities offered by the deregulated legal market.

"Consumers generally don't have a regular solicitor," he said. "The ability to support a charity when choosing a quality local solicitor for their legal needs could be beneficial for both consumer and charity."
